Nissan has launched the 2021 Navara pickup truck in Europe and South America. It is called the Frontier in the latter, but we’ll stick to calling it Navara to reduce the confusion.
It looks fresh on the outside with noticeable changes, some tweaks inside the cabin, and a few under the skin as well. The highlight of this update is the introduction of the PRO-4X package. Unlike the U.S.-spec Frontier’s PRO-4X, which is an off-road package, the one on the European Navara is just a styling kit. Will Mercedes come back and try to build another truck based on this refreshed model?
Up front, the facelifted Navara comes with updated LED headlights and C-shaped daytime running lights. Navara/Frontier lettering is embossed on the grille. On the other sides, there’s nothing much to write home about. The biggest inclusion, however, is that of the PRO-4X package. It is a styling package on the Navara, and comes with a black emblem, orange-accented front bumper, black grille, door handles, roof racks, running boards, and 17-inch black wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires.
The company’s senior design director for pickups and frame SUVs, Ken Lee, said, “The new Navara has a very recognizable look, but it’s now more imposing thanks to its high command structure, new interlocking frame grille, and new high-tech, squared C-shaped headlamps.”
Nissan has introduced some safety systems on this model. There’s an Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, which monitors the second vehicle ahead as well as the vehicle directly in front to reduce the risk of multi-car accidents, the Intelligent Emergency Braking, and Intelligent Around View Monitor uses four cameras to help with parking, especially with a trailer hitched to the truck. An off-road monitor too makes its debut, which checks surrounding obstacles at low speeds when in four-wheel-drive mode.
“We packaged the new model with a full set of advanced technologies to ensure enhanced dynamic performance on- and off-road, as well as safety and comfort ushering in a new age of toughness, tech, and peace of mind,” said Ashwani Gupta, Nissan’s chief operating officer. “For our customers it means confidence, driving pleasure, practicality, and pride of ownership.”
Under the hood, it retains the same pair of engines, but the rear axle is strengthened and the payload capacity is increased too. Nissan hasn’t provided the numbers, though. There will be a new integrated step in the rear bumper, too. Finally, a new steering rack has been adopted to make the handling even better.
As for the engines, Nissan offers the Navara with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder diesel mill in two –different states of tune. One makes 158 horses and 297 pound-feet of torque, whereas the other one churns out 187 ponies and 332 pound-feet of torque.
The 2021 Nissan Navara looks quite fresh and the addition of the new PRO-4X package will attract a lot of buyers. Although it is just a styling package when compared to off-road kit sold in the U.S., it still adds to the pizzazz off the truck. Nissan hasn’t announced the pricing yet, but did say that the truck will go on sale in Thailand first – in December this year – followed by the other markets.
The Navara is related to the Frontier sold in North America; so this could be a preview of what to expect from the new Frontier. Nissan has been selling the same Frontier in the U.S. since its inception. The next-gen is expected to have a starting price of around $26,000, which is over $7,000 more than the price of the current Frontier. Hopefully, Nissan will reveal more details about it soon.
